Lily took a set of test tubes from her pack and held one up with a wicked smile. “Soil samples,” she said, as if she’d just suggested a naughty game. “Want to help me collect them?’

I was more than happy to. Lily explained that she needed a few different soil samples from around the hill. The dirt at the top was a good candidate for testing, of course, but if we could pull some of the sandy loam off the beach, that would be great, too.

“And those trees over there,” Lily said, gesturing with her finger. “The soil underneath of them should have more biological material in it. Should allow us to pick up on anything we might have missed.”

“Biological material? What, like from people?”

Lily shook her head. “Bugs, mostly,” she said, a smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. “Bugs and leaves. Maybe an occasional worm.”

“That’s a little less interesting.”

Lily laughed. “The point is to make sure that carbon-based lifeforms exist in this world, and that they aren’t so poisonous that they’re going to harm us. So definitely go and get some soil from under those trees.” She pushed another vial into my hand. “When you grab a sample from the beach, check it out for me, would you?”

“Why?” I couldn’t help but smile. “Are you thinking of taking a vacation here?”

“Maybe,” she replied, matching my smirk with her own. “Now go. I’ll be handling stuff up here while you’re gone.”

Part of me wanted to suggest it was folly to split up—that we’d have been better served sticking together. But this was no horror movie. Besides, we’d be in each other’s field of view almost the entire time. With no people or animals around, the risk of trotting down to the beach and back were pretty low.
